Although crickets are not your usual types of pests inside the house, they can be quite disastrous when they inhabit an area of your yard. Crickets are mainly seen on areas that have water supply as well as an easy access to their food and shelter. In short, they can be seen near your garden which is a big “no trespassing” for insects and all sorts of pests that can cause damages to your beautiful place. If you are lucky enough on catching the first sign of invasion and would not want to use pesticides to preserve the beauty of the environment as well, you can always make traps for catching crickets alive.
Aside from preserving Mother Nature, you can also make money out of these insects as they can be used as good baits for fish. In addition, they are also popular as food for many pet reptiles. You can turn a bad event of infestation into an additional source of income by selling crickets to pet shops and pet owners in your area. Here is a simple guide on how you can make your trap effective and successful in catching crickets.
· Dig – get your shovel from the storage room and dig a hole about 20 inches deep and 10 inches wide. This will prevent the crickets from springing or climbing out of the hole. You can always adjust this to your preference; however make sure that it is suitable for an effective trap as you would not want the insects to be able to easily get out of the trap. Make sure that the sides of the hole are dug in a straight line from top to bottom to avoid any easy attempt of climbing out.
· Cover – crickets love to hide under stuffs, especially when they are damp. However, placing a dampened towel on top of the hole will only all into the pit. Use a dry towel instead and cover the hole. You can always put rocks on the edges of the cloth to keep it in place. You can always put a container that will fit properly into the hole as this will make the collection or harvesting process much easier than it would be without it. Make sure that it has a smooth surface to prevent the crickets from crawling out.
· Bait – put suitable bait on the hole to catch the attention of crickets. This will make them think that the area is a suitable habitat as it has almost everything in it. However, what they do not know is that they have fallen on a trap designed to keep them inside.
· Check and Harvest – in the morning, check the trap and see if it has caught crickets. In case you have multiple catches by morning, make sure to remove the crickets and place them in a suitable cricket apartment where you can take care for them for a while before disposing them to pet shops. Put back the container into the hole and repeat the process over and over.
